Math

Our district has adopted the Investigations Math series. This is a series designed to:

  • Support students to make sense of math and learn that they can be math thinkers.
  • Focus on computational fluency with whole numbers as a major goal of the elementary grades.
  • Provide substantive work in important areas of math- rational numbers, geometry, measurement, data and early algebra- and connections among them.
  • Emphasize reasoning about math ideas.
  • Engage the range of learners in understanding math.

Story Problems

The students will be exploring many math concepts through the use of story problems. They will have to solve and create them.

 2 Digit Addition and Subtraction

We will start adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers this year. It is always easier for students to transition into this if they know their math facts well. I would encourage you to practice math facts at home.

 Time

We will be working with time to the nearest minute. We will be working with clocks and working with elapsed time story problems. I encourage you to work on time at home since this is a tricky skill for many students.

 Money

We will be counting money and change up to 5 dollars. One way to practice this skill is to pull out all of your change and count it. You can even play store at home with a parent, sibling or friend.

Fractions and Measurement

We will be creating and labeling fractions. We will also be measuring many items around the classroom to the nearest inch, foot and yard.

  Shapes

We will be learning the characteristics of 2D shapes and 3D shapes and we will also be comparing and contrasting different shape features.
